This research project explores the less-common use of machine learning in proposing and narrating alternative world models in which humans are not the sole creator. Counter to the ways that machine learning has tended to maximize efficiencies, or the ways that computational “brute force” techniques have been used to analyze and categorize enormous “data sets,” I am proposing a type of “machine imagination” that offers a way to converse and think collectively with other entities like lichens.
